Dashcams are a ‘useful addition’ to a vehicle, say three-quarters of motorists

Three-quarters (73%) of motorists feel a dashcam is a useful addition to a vehicle, according to survey by automotive retailer Peter Vardy.

Just over half (51%) of the drivers surveyed had already made use of one, with a further 22% stating that they were considering making the purchase.

Key reasons for investing in the technology are personal safety (59%), general insurance purposes (54%) and ensuring the safety of a vehicle when left unattended, for example in a public car park (38%).

Wider acceptance by the public to dashcams will help fleets to introduce the technology to their own vehicles, overriding drivers’ big brother concerns. Presently, dashcams are primarily used on trucks to provide footage in the event of an accident. However, a growing number of companies are looking to install them on vans and cars.

Claire Rogan, digital marketing manager at Peter Vardy, said: “Dashcams are very much a Marmite item, but love them or hate them, they are becoming a more common feature in our vehicles, with their popularity predicted to continue to grow.

“The safety of not only yourself and your passengers, but also of your vehicle is paramount, so it is not surprising that more and more of us are opting to make use of them.

“Whatever your reason for investing in one, a dashcam can be a very sensible addition to your vehicle and can aid in anything from insurance claims to helping you to improve on your own driving skills.”
